A random assault, an unprovoked violent outburst and a running skateboarder highlighted a mixed bag of nuts for the Nelson Police as they grappled with 85 calls for service late last week.

A Safeway employee was on a work break and was seated outside of the store on Anderson Street on Wednesday afternoon, when a young man around 14 years old walked by and without provocation punched the employee in the arm.

“The male suspect was walking with a female believed to be his mother, and the pair left the scene,” said NPD Sgt. Steve Bank.

Police are seeking the identity of the pair to further the investigation.

The threat of violence

Another unprovoked incident of violence brought police out to the Chahko Mika Mall on Wednesday.

A man threatened an employee with violence towards him and his family around 6:20 p.m.  The man left the mall and was subsequently located and arrested on board a North Shore Nelson transit bus.

The 45-year-old man will be appearing in Nelson Provincial Court charged with threatening.

Talk and run

After a Nelson police officer stopped a skateboarder in the downtown core around 8 p.m. Wednesday, the young man fled in the middle of the conversation.

The youth was located a short time later hiding from the police. He was arrested and was turned over to his parents and will be charged with obstructing a police officer.

Up on the roof

A group of young people popped up on the radar of the police on Wednesday night around 9:30 p.m. when they were spotted on the roof of an office building at 518 Lake Street.

While police were searching the building a young man was seen to break out of the building and ran into the downtown core. The man was not located.

However, a further search of the premises revealed nothing was stolen or damaged in the break-in. The incident is still under investigation.

Unlucky number 13

On Tuesday night around 1:20 a.m. police recognized a man walking in the downtown core who was wanted in relation to a series of local thefts and frauds.

The 20-year-old man was taken into custody and was found to be in possession of a set of brass knuckles, a prohibited weapon.

The man was subsequently charged with 13 criminal offences, including fraud, possession of stolen property, theft and weapon offences.

He is presently on bail with conditions.

Looking for a clue

Police are still investigating a break and enter that occurred Tuesday night in the El-Taco restaurant at 306 Victoria St.

The investigation is ongoing and police are requesting the assistance of the public for any information regarding the incident.

In all, police answered 85 calls for service between Tuesday, May 17 and Friday, May 20.
