District receives final funds despite drop in student enrolment

The Kootenay Lake school district’s overall enrolment numbers are down 115 students, corresponding to a 2,367 drop province-wide, as final student numbers from the Province roll in.

School District No. 8 had a final total of 5,031 students enrolled district wide in full time programs as recorded in June, down from the 5,146 estimated in March.

Even still, the district will be getting $233,000 from the Province as part of their final grant for their 2010/11 school budget of $50.1 million.

School districts around the province are receiving a total of $12.3 million as the final portion of their 2010-11 school year funding. These funds have been made available because overall student enrolment was lower than districts had estimated.

B.C.’s school districts receive funding for every student they enrol. Preliminary funding for SD8 for the 2010-11 year was determined last March based on district enrolment estimates.

At the time, the district estimated total student enrolment was 5,146 — and 557,439 total across the province — for the 2010-11 school year. Actual enrolment was 5,031 —555,072 across BC — 115 students fewer than anticipated.

In December 2010, districts shared $47.1 million in holdback funding at $88 per FTE student because September enrolment was lower than estimated.

At that time, enrolment in the Kootenay Lake School District had risen, albeit marginally, with a corresponding jump of almost $1.2 million in extra funding from the Province.

According to preliminary figures released by the Ministry of Education, SD8 saw their 5,038 full-year enrolment from 2009/10 bump to 5,080 for the new school year — the 13th highest gain in the province.

Two years ago SD8 lost around 120 students, and 80 fewer students were enrolled last year. The drop in enrolment forced reorganization and reconfiguration of schools in SD8 in 2007 when the district reconfigured schools in Nelson so elementary schools were K to Grade 5, Trafalgar became a Grade 6 to 8 middle school and LV Rogers took on Grade 9 to 12 students.

The five years of reconfiguration saw the closure of several schools in the Nelson area, including Central Elementary School, Gordon Sargent Primary and AI Collinson on the North Shore.
