Negotiations between Canada Post, CUPW break off; legislation debate continues
Despite intense negotiations over the past 72 hours, Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) have not been able to reach an agreement and talks between the two have broken off.
The company and union still remain far apart on several issues. Canada Post still has an offer on the table — one that protects the pay, pension and job security of existing employees.
Employees hired in the future would be offered wages and benefits superior to those offered by competing logistic and delivery companies.
Parliament cleared a procedural hurdle Thursday morning that brings MPs one step closer to debating back-to-work legislation for Canada Post workers.
The move means MPs are likely to have a late night or even an all-nighter on Parliament Hill.
MPs voted to limit debate on a motion that will allow for Bill C-6 to be pushed through the House of Commons in one sitting instead of going through the normal number of readings and committee stages.
Debate on that motion will continue throughout the day but will be brought to a vote — and passed with the Conservative majority — at 8 p.m. ET.
How long it takes is up to the NDP. The Official Opposition doesn’t support the back-to-work bill and could delay the vote by putting up all of its 103 MPs as speakers.
