Salmo man facing multiple charges after allegedly trying to run people over after a disagreement
A 25-year –old Salmo man is facing a laundry list of charges after apparently trying to run people down with his car after a disagreement, according to RCMP Staff Sgt. Dan Seibel.
Seibel said police responded to a call at about 11 p.m. on Saturday, and found a 1991 Chev Blazer that had crashed into a cement barrier and flipped onto its roof.
“Witnesses added that the vehicle had been driven toward them, and that the driver had attempted to run them over,” he said. “Witnesses …added that the driver had been with them (at a gathering behind the curling club) earlier in the evening, but left after a disagreement.
Seibel said the man attempted to flee the scene on foot after crashing his vehicle, prompting a “Good Samaritan” to try to stop him, at which point the driver produced a knife and began making threats.
“The witness backed away and the suspect ran off and departed the area.”
Police were able to determine that the Chevy had been stolen earlier that same night, and to ascertain the identity of the suspect. They located and arrested the man at his Salmo residence. He is currently being held in custody and will appear in provincial court on June 21 in Rossland. Charges include dangerous driving, assault with a weapon, uttering threats and theft of vehicle under $5,000. “Alcohol is a factor in the incident, and a charge of impaired driving is also being recommended,” Seibel said.
