The family of drowned Kootenay search and rescue tech speaks out

The Winnipeg family of 29-year-old Sheilah Sweatman is coming to grips with her recent death, an article in The Vancouver Province reports.

Sweatman, who moved to Ymir two years ago, drowned Wednesday afternoon during a recovery attempt in the Goat River river near Creston.

She was part of a dozen Kootenay Swift Water Specialists who were searching a submerged vehicle for occupants presumed drowned in the dangerously swollen river when she fell off a rescue boat.

She never surfaced.

“She thought it was an important mission to provide help to other people,” said her father. “Maybe save a life.
