Not a lot of hot air: Flightfest wings into Nelson this weekend

The hot winds of summer are blowing the annual Flightfest into Nelson this weekend.
The Nelson Pilots Association will be hosting the annual event, as well as the Airport Appreciation Day on Saturday.
This aviation event attracts both locals and folks flying in from across BC, Alberta the US — last year’s furthest participants flew in all the way from Ontario — to Nelson’s Municipal Airport (CZNL).
Aircraft will begin arriving on the evening of Friday, Aug. 5, but the fun gets underway Saturday morning with the famous pancake breakfast at the airport starting at 8 am.
From aerobatic gliders to jets, the excitement starts right after that with antique, classic, warbird and home built aircraft all on display. As well, flying demonstrations and an afternoon air show will be the order of the day.
Featured will be several renowned Canadian airshow performers such as Bill Carter, John Mrazek and Paul Hajduk.
Also making an appearance will be the Canadian Military with two aircraft — a brand new Harvard II NATO trainer and a SAR Buffalo — doing flying displays and later on static display all day Saturday Aug. 6.
Lunch, a heritage bus tour, shopping on historic Baker Street, tire kicking, swimming, or just a relaxing walk along the beautiful waterfront rounds out a fantastic laid back West Kootenay weekend.
Last year’s event saw more that 3,500 people through the gates. Support general aviation and the airport by planning to be part of this grass roots aviation tradition.
