Vees, St. Denis put some serious hurt on Smokies

Former Trail Smoke Eater Travis St. Denis came back to haunt his ex-mates.

The Silver City native scored twice and added two assists to lead the Penticton Vees to a 9-1 thrashing of the Smokies Saturday night in BCHL action the South Okanagan.

St. Denis came to the Vees during the summer in a two-for-one deal with the Cowichan Valley Capitals.

The game was never in doubt as the Vees scored twice in the first period before blowing the contest open with a four-spot in the second.

Penticton led 9-1 before the Smokies snapped the shutout bid of starter Chad Katurnar.

Mike Reilly, Grant Nicholson, Cody DePourcq, Kyle Beaulieu, Troy Stecher, Steven Fogarty and Mario Lucia also scored for Penticton.

Trail starter Matt Larose made through 32 minutes in goal before being pulled in favour of backup Reed Vogt.

Trail won is first game of the season Friday when the Smokies edged Merritt Centennials 5-3.

The game was not your textbook victory as the Smokies fell behind 3-0 before roaring back with five straight markers to edge the Cents.

Three of the goals came on the power play by Adam Boytinck, Brent Baltus and Nic Wong.

Clayton Chessa scored the winner six minutes and an insurance marker in the final minute.

Trail returns home Friday to begin a home-and-home series against Salmon Arm Silverbacks.

The return match goes Saturday in Salmon Arm.
