UPDATE: RCMP release name of skier killed in avalanche on Meadow Mountain near Kaslo

RCMP has released the name of the skier killed during an avalanche on Meadow Mountain the morning of Friday, Feb. 3, 2012.
The deceased’s name is Ilkka Saarinen.
The 50-year-old native of Janakkala, Finland, was skiing down a run when an avalanche buried him.
Guides quickly dug Saarinen out from under the avalanche, but despite quickly performing CPR could not revive the skier.
The fatality is the first for Selkirk Wilderness Skiing in more than three decades of operation.

A skier is dead following an avalanche Friday morning on Meadow Mountain near Kaslo Staff Sgt. Dan Seibel of the Kootenay Boundary RCMP said in a press release.
The deceased male skier was part of a group of 8-9 skiers when the avalance occured at approximately 11:30 a.m. The group included three guides.
The man was buried by the avalanche before being extricated by the group. CPR was performed at the scene but the man could not revived.
The man was later airlifted to Kootenay Lake Hospital in Nelson.
No other injuries were reported.
Staff Sgt. Seibel said the victim’s identity has not been released, pending notification of next of kin.
The group was on a ski venture on Meadow Mountain, which is located within the tenure of Selkirk Wilderness Skiing.
The cat-skiing operation is based out of the small town of Meadow Creek, north of Kaslo.
The Canadian Avalanche Centre rated the avalanche danger for the area as considerable in the alpine and moderate at treeline and below treeline. The area the avalanche occurred at is not known.
