A 56-year-old Nelson woman was killed in a two-vehicle collision Thursday morning near the Bakery store in Thrums on Highway 3A east of Castlegar.

At approximately 8:30 a.m. Thursday, Nelson RCMP and Tarrys Fire Department responded to a call of an accident at the 1600 block of Thrums east of Castlegar.

“The driver of a 1997 Toyota Rav SUV lost control and crossed over the center line into the on-coming lane and collided head-on with a Chambers chip truck,” said Sergeant Derrick Donovan of the RCMP West Kootenay Traffic Services.

“Unfortunately, the driver of the chip truck tried to swerve to but could not avoid colliding with the SUV,” Donovan added.

Gwen Elizabeth Kalyniuk, 56, of Nelson, the lone occupant of the SUV, was pronounced dead at the scene by B.C. Ambulance.

The male driver of the chip truck from Castlegar, although shaken up, was not hurt in the collision.

The road was closed for two-and-a-half hours while RCMP and the B.C. Coroner’s Office reviewed the accident.

Traffic was re-routed onto the Pass Creek road until Highway 3A was reopened at approximately 11 a.m. to one-lane. The highway was opened to two-lanes at about 2:30 p.m.

Donovan said at the time of the accident the highway was covered in snow and slush.

“We all thought winter was over but it’s evident there’s still more winter diving ahead for us,” Donovan said.

Donovan said RCMP would look over the Toyota Rav Friday of to determine if there was any mechanical failure that may have caused the accident.
