Taghum woman escapes serious injury after truck gets away

A Taghum woman escaped serious injury after she lost control of the vehicle she was driving outside her home 10 kilometes west of Nelson.
The accident occurred at 3:30 p.m. Friday.
The woman was in the driveway of her Taghum home to move the family truck.
Already hampered by an injured leg (which was in a cast) and needing a crutch to get around, the woman climbed into the Mazda pickup to move the vehicle to another part of the driveway.
However, the truck accelerated, causing the woman to lose control before the vehicle sped over the Sproule Creek road and down the steep 150-meter bank toward Highway 3A less than a kilometer east of Taghum Shell.
Seeing nothing good coming from remaining inside the truck, the woman jumped to safety, clinging onto to a small tree while watching the vehicle eventually stop against the only tree on the bank.
The woman, unhurt, managed to climb up the bank to the Sproule Creek access road.
A neighbour, hearing a loud bang, called 911 before coming to the aid of the woman.
The wrecker arrived to pull the truck up the bank before towing the vehicle away.
