NPD applauds calmness of couple in B&E case

City Police are applauding the quick actions of a local family in helping with the arrest of a 46-year-old male Friday evening.
“The Nelson Police would like to commend the family for remaining calm and patient during a stressful incident,” acting Sergeant Dino Falcone said in an emailed press release early Saturday morning.
Falcone’s comments came after a suspect was arrested Friday evening when the family called 911 to report a man in the couple’s house while they were at home.
“The Family was understandably shaken up and thankfully were not physically injured,” Falcone added.
The incident occurred Friday at 7:30 p.m. when Nelson Police received a 911 call from a couple reporting an unknown intruder in their home.
Within minutes Nelson Police arrived at the scene, arresting a 46-year-old male attempting to flee the scene.
The arresting officer sustained minor injuries during the chase apprehending the suspect.
Charged with Break and Enter with Intent, Uttering Threats to a Police Officer and Robbery is Robert Ryan of no fixed address.
Ryan has an extensive criminal history with more than 20 convictions for robbery, serious assaults, and thefts mainly in the lower Mainland.
Police investigators believe that the accused randomly entered the home looking for valuables.
The accused will be held over the weekend and is scheduled to attend Nelson Provincial Court on Monday (August 13).
Intoxicated man spends night in jail
Saturday (August 11) morning, at 2:15 a.m., Nelson Police responded to a man refusing to leave a local bar.
When Nelson Police officers arrived the man fled on foot, but was located a few blocks away highly intoxicated and agitated.
The 31-year-old male from Kelowna was charged for failing to comply with his Recognizance.
The man is under strict curfew conditions and to abstain from alcohol.
The accused was released Saturday morning on a recognizance to appear in Nelson Provincial Court in October.
Young driver given 24-hour prohibition
Shortly after midnight Friday, while on patrol Nelson Police observed a suspicious vehicle parked in the Cottonwood Park parking lot.
When police approached a passenger in the front seat fled on foot.
Officers were unable to locate the suspect.
However, the 18-year-old driver from New Denver was given a 24-hour prohibition for being impaired by drug.
The vehicle impounded by Western Auto Wreckers.
Eagle-eyed citizens help recover stolen scooter
At 10 a.m. Friday, Nelson Police received a call of a stolen scooter worth approximately $2000.
Shortly after alert citizens called police to report a male and female pushing a scooter in the Lakeside Park parking lot.
Nelson Police arrested a 32-year-old Nelson resident for possession of stolen property under $5000 dollars.
He is scheduled to attend Nelson Provincial Court on October 23,.
Calgary teens back in Cowtown after crime spree
Nelson Police picked up three teens from Calgary Wednesday (August 8) morning with a quantity of cash and merchandise.
Police were alerted the teens might be in Nelson after receiving a call just after midnight from a distraught Calgary father reported his son was missing.
The father, believing his son was heading for Nelson, also advised police that his son stole over $5000 dollars in cash from his safe as well as expensive watches, jewelry and clothing.
Nelson police officers located the missing 15 year-old youth along with another friend that wasn’t reported missing from Calgary in a Nelson residence.
The two were both taken into custody while officers liaised with the Calgary Police Department’s Break and Enter Unit and the Ministry of Children and Families.
At the same time another 17 year-old male was also taken into custody.
All three Calgary parents were notified and the three youths are back in Calgary possibly facing several charges.
Jaws of life needed to remove driver in multi-vehicle pile up
Wednesday afternoon (August 8) NPD responded to several 911 calls of an accident at the intersection of Government and Granite Roads.
It appears that a 17 year-old driver from Blewett was attempting to cross busy Highway 3A and was struck by a westbound truck.
During the collision the truck inadvertently struck another vehicle waiting to turn left on the highway in the opposite direction.
The 40-year-old female driver had to be extricated by the Nelson Fire Department’s Jaws of Life before being transported to the Kootenay Lake Hospital with non-life threatening injuries by the BC Ambulance Service.
There was considerable damage sustained to two of the three vehicles involved in the accident.
Charges are pending for the 17 year-old Blewett resident.
