A Saskatchewan motorcyclist has died from injuries sustained during an accident Tuesday afternoon near the Shoreacres Bridge a few kilometers west of the junction of Highway 3A and 6 in South Slocan.

At approximately 2 p.m., Castlegar detachment received a report of a collision between a motorcycle and a Ford Explorer on Highway 3A, west of the Shoreacres Bridge.

The driver of the Explorer SUV was heading west trying to overtake a logging truck, and possibly another vehicle, in the two-lane-passing lane.

During the pass the Winlaw driver of the SUV lost control and crossed the centerline into the eastbound lane.

Two oncoming (eastbound) motorcycles with single riders took evasive action to avoid the SUV.

One motorcyclist braked and then put the bike on its side. The driver fell off the motorcycle, tumbled and suffered serious injuries.

BC Ambulance attended the accident, taking the injured rider to Kootenay Lake Hospital where Clifford Wright, 66, of Swift Current, Saskatchewan, was pronounced dead.

The second motorcycle rider, Wright’s adult son, was able to safely come to a stop while witnessing the accident.

Traffic on Highway 3A was reduced to single-lane, alternating traffic well into the evening while local RCMP waited for a Collision Analyst from the Cranbrook detachment to attend and examine the scene.

Victim Services were called out and are currently assisting the family.

Alcohol/Drugs were not a factor in the accident.

Serious accident slows Highway 3A traffic Tuesday

Highway 3A west of the South Slocan junction was slowed to single lane traffic for most of Tuesday afternoon following a serious accident that closed down the eastbound lane.

At approximately 2:20 p.m. west of the Shoreacres Bridge, a Harley Davidson touring motorcycle collided with a Ford Explorer sending the driver of the motorcycle to the pavement.

The rider was from Saskatchewan and was touring with another bike from Alberta.

RCMP attended the scene along with B.C. Ambulance. The person on the motorcycle was taken to hospital. No word on the extent of injuries.

The accident scene was left intact for most of the afternoon while RCMP waited for the investigation team to reconstruct the collision.

The result left Highway 3A to alternating single lane traffic, with flag people directing vehicles, for most of the afternoon and into the evening while police continued the investigation.

The RCMP is expecting to release details of the accident Wednesday.
