Even a threat of thunderstorms could not deter motorcycle riders from slipping on the helmet to participate in the 25th annual West Kootenay Toy Run Sunday.

Not only did the 450-plus riders donate a truckload of toys for children in the West Kootenay, but also the ride raised more than $30,000 to be distributed within the region.

“Four hundred and fifty seems to be what we get every year,” said WK Toy Run past president James Kallin.

“We had 250 a couple of years ago when it rained but 450 seems to be the norm most years.”

The ride began in Castlegar with a breakfast before riders took to the road with stops in Nelson, Salmo and Trail before returning to the Sunflower City.

While riders cruised the West Kootenay roads, organizers held kids games back at the Castlegar Community Complex Arena parking lot before the pack returned in the afternoon.

Big winners included Dennis Costa of Castlegar winning the 2012 Harley Davidson Black Line and Joanne Fenner, also of Castlegar, capturing the second bike raffle, a 2012 Harley Davidson Iron 883 Sportster.

Organizers raffled off two motorcycles in honour of the 25th anniversary.

Other draw winners included Sally Dobler of Qualicum Beach taking home $1000, Bev Basran of Castlegar winning $500 and Ed Lepp of Castlegar, Tammy of Rossland, Roy Hackett of Castlegar and Paddy Duddy of Nelson each winning $100.

Kallin said the day was an overwhelming success and even saw a proposal during speeches in Castlegar.
