Environment Canada is calling for up to 10 to 15 centimeters of snow to fall in the West Kootenay for most of Monday as temperatures hover around the zero mark.

The warning should end Monday evening with just a 40 percent chance of flurries.

Forecast for Tuesday is for mostly cloudy periods.

Environment Canada issues snowfall warning

There is a heavy snow expected Sunday night and Monday for the West Kootenay region.

Environment Canada said an area of low pressure skirting the BC-US border is forecast to spread snow into the Southern Kootenays beginning Sunday evening.

Moisture mixed with the low pressure combined with a southerly flow up the Okanagan Valley will likely lead to upwards of 10 centimeters of snow Sunday night and an additional 10 centimeters expected Monday morning are possible.

In the Kootenay regions generally five to 10 centimeters of snow is expected Sunday night with an additional five to 10 centimeters Monday.

Higher amounts of 10 to 15 centimeters are expected to fall in Trail, Rossland and Warfield Sunday night.

Snow is expected to begin to taper off through Monday afternoon as the low pressure exits the region to the east.
