Superintendent of School Division 20 (SD 20) Greg Luterbach, has released a statement regarding the untimely death of a teacher yesterday morning at Twin Rivers Elementary.

“We suffered a tragedy at Twin Rivers Elementary School Tuesday.  Brian Rigby, a teacher in our district since the mid-’90s, died suddenly and unexpectedly.

“In addition to our grief over the loss of this member of our community, we are sensitive to the fact that such an event has an impact on our staff and students,” he added.

“In response, the district has implemented our Critical Incident Response plan which allows Twin Rivers staff and students an opportunity to talk about their thoughts and feelings with trained professional staff.

“The district’s and board’s thoughts are with Brian’s family and everyone impacted (Twin Rivers staff, friends, colleagues, current and former students and others).

“Thank you to first responders and hospital staff for their efforts.”

Luterbach was also able to confirm that the incident did not happen in a classroom, and advised parents to call their school principal, Doug Hickey, for advice/assistance in how to manage the issue with their children (250-365-8465).

The cause of death is believed to be a heart attack.

The Castlegar Source extends its deepest condolences to the school and students, as well as to Mr. Rigby’s family and friends.
