A RCMP officer from Tofino was injured after being struck by a passing car during a road-side stop near the Vancouver Island community.

The incident happened Friday (August 2) at 9:28 p.m.

Cst. Kathy Bullock of the Tofino Detachment was conducting a traffic stop on the Pacific Rim Highway just outside of Tofino.

During her interaction with the stopped motorist, Cst. Bullock turned to walk back to her fully marked police car (emergency lights activated), when she was struck by the passenger side mirror of a passing vehicle. The driver of that vehicle did not stop or make attempts to check on the condition of the injured officer.

BC Ambulance Service Paramedics were called to the scene, and transported Cst. Bullock to hospital.  She was released a few hours later following treatment for abrasions and whiplash type injuries.

Cst. Bullock is expected to return to full duties soon.

The impact of the collision caused the mirror of the suspect vehicle to break off at the scene.

Using the mirror as evidence, RCMP from the Tofino and Ucluelet Detachments launched an extensive search of the area. The suspect vehicle, a 2005 Hyundai Accent, was found in a parking lot in Tofino, but the driver was not with it.

A short time later, the suspect driver was located by patrolling officers, arrested and taken into custody.

The 30-year-old woman from Tofino is now facing criminal charges related to impaired driving and failing to remain at the scene of a crash.
