RedFish Festival attracts 2000 to witness Kokanee Salmon run
Humans outnumbered the redfish during the RedFish Festival this past weekend at Kokanee Creek Park on the North Shore of Kootenay Lake.
However, the sub-1000 return of the Kokanee Salmon is only a start.
The RedFish Festival a hit as campers and residents joined to celebrate the return of the Kokanee Salmon to the Kokanee Creek Park spawning Sunday.
Music, dance, good food and kids activities drew a crowd of nearly 2000, but the highlight of the day was the fish tours conducted every 20 minutes from noon to 6 p.m.
Most tours were full.
Participants heard that this year may be a lower count year as it reflects the number of kokanee in the channel spawning three years ago.
Fish are still arriving, however, in time for the school programs slated for the first three weeks in September.
Organizers were very pleased with the turnout and the weather, which allowed festival goers a chance to enjoy the park and the fish in late summer beauty.
The Visitors Centre will be open for Labour Day and close for the season Tuesday to allow the school programs.
