Police Check Stop Program officially begins Friday

The Nelson Police Department/RCMP holiday Check Stop Program officially begins Friday (November 29).
While it’s not a good idea to drive at anytime after having a few drinks, during the Christmas season is definitely a “no-no” as Nelson Police will be targeting impaired driving and other types of high risk driving behavior.
This includes aggressive driving, people that aren’t wearing seatbelts, speeding or using hand held devices while driving.
Drivers can expect to see an increased officer presence on roadways for the remainder of the holiday season said Sargent Paul Bayes of the Nelson Police Department.
“Don’t drink and Drive. It’s not worth risking it,” Sgt. Bayes said.
“Prepare your vehicle for emergencies. Don’t get caught on a dark, cold road without a flashlight or warm winter boots. and Drive carefully. Ice and Snow can make winter driving treacherous. Drive slowly, don’t hurry and watch for other drivers.”
ICBC said on average, 31 people are killed in crashes involving impaired driving in the Southern Interior every year and every December, an average of 1,100 people are injured in 3,800 crashes.
