Nelson Police warn public of mail fraud
Nelson Police are warning the public of another fraud making its way through the city.
The local detachment has recently been receiving complaints regarding a newly circulated mail fraud.
The fraudster personally addresses letters from a male claiming to be representing an accounting firm in Spain who are in charge of assets moved to Spain in relation to the Second World War.
The letter elaborates on the circumstances surrounding these assets eventually claiming that the targeted party is entitled to transfer of these assets into their name.
The letter asks for consent from the targeted person for permission to use them as a beneficiary to claim the assets.
Based on the identical wording of the letters provided to police, investigators are lead to believe that the matter is in fact an attempt to defraud the targeted citizens.
If anyone receives or has received these letters they are advised to not respond to the sender and report the matter to their respective police department.
Further information regarding such “mail scams” can be found online at the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre .
A night in the drunk tank
On Saturday (December 7) at 1:30 a.m. an NPD member was waved down by an intoxicated female requesting assistance in getting home.
Due to the extreme weather conditions and her not being dressed appropriately for it the member allowed her to warm up in the vehicle while he finished with another matter.
The female decided to leave the area on her own before she could be offered any further assistance. A short time later staff at a nearby bar reported her to NPD as they were also concerned for her wellbeing.
Once police were able to determine the name of the 24-year-olds, it was found she was bound by an order from previous charges to abstain from drinking alcohol.
The woman was transported to cells and released when sober and able to arrange a ride home and will appear in Nelson Law Courts in the New Year to answer to charges of breaching release conditions.
