Cops vs firefighters: winner is Castlegar

What’s the one thing in the world that will get city cops and fire fighters trash talking each other? You guessed it – hockey!
As a fun final push in Castlegar’s bid to be named Kraft Hockeyville 2014, a “Smoke and Guns” road hockey match-up between local RCMP and volunteer fire fighters is slated for Saturday at the Complex at 1 p.m., and fire chief Gerry Rempel said it should be a real barn-burner.
“They only way they (the cops) will get past us is to taser us,” he said.
Castlegar top cop Sgt. Laurel Mathew added there’ll likely be council members, Rebels and Saints added to the line-ups to protect the more fragile “hosers”.
“I heard they’re going to mix the teams up because everyone was afraid we’d wipe the floor with them,” she said, adding it should be an entertaining game, regardless who plays who.
City councillor Sue Heaton-Sherstobitoff said this is a critical final event to give Castlegar the extra push it needs to make the finals in the Hockeyville competition.
“We’re sitting at just over 300 nominations now, so hopefully by closing on Sunday (at 8:59 p.m. our time), we’ll have over 400,” she said.
To that end, there will be a nomination table at the Complex tomorrow (Friday) from 9 to 11 a.m., where it’ll just take a minute or two to add your nomination to the Kraft Hockeyville site.
They’ll also be taking pictures and posting about Friday evening’s City Skate Party at the Kinnaird outdoor rinks from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., with fireworks at 7 p.m.
