Nelson Fire Department responds to fire at Hume Hotel
Guests at the Hume Hotel got an early wake up call due to a fire in the laundry room Sunday morning.
Nelson Fire Department responded to a call shortly after 7 a.m. of a fire that originated in the laundry room in one of the commercial dryers.
“Both on-duty Nelson Fire Department members responded immediately with one additional member responding from home,” said Michael Daloise, Assistant Fire Chief in a media release.
“Information on the cause and extent of the smoke was not readily available as the caller had been directed to just call the fire department.”
When crews arrived at the hotel at 422 Vernon Street smoke was visible coming from the laundry room vents.
The first arriving officer directed staff to activate the fire alarm system to initiate an evacuation of the building. Nelson Police Department also responded to assist in the hotel evacuation including a physical check of rooms for unaccounted guests.
Fire crews encountered a laundry room filled with heavy smoke conditions with an active fire in one of the dryer units.
The fire was extinguished and crews then worked on checking to ensure that there was no fire extension.
The next challenge was removing the smoke from the building.
“The smoke was heaviest in the basement but there was smoke throughout the building to the fourth floor,” Daloise said. “Fans were set up to push the smoke out as crews continued to work in the fire room.”
A fire restoration company was called and is on scene assisting hotel staff with cleanup.
Daloise said police and the hotel staff were of great help in assisting with life safety as well as helping to reduce the damage from the smoke.
In all, seven firefighters responded to the incident with two fire engines, one ladder truck, and two utility vehicles.
“No injuries were reported as a result of this incident,” Daloise said.
“Damage is estimated at $25000. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.”
The fire was the second call in as many days for NFD.
Shortly before 3 a.m. Saturday, crews responded to a report of poster board on fire at the bus stop at Ward & Baker Streets.
When NFD arrived fire had been extinguished by a bystander that used a fire extinguisher to suppress the fire.
The on duty crew wetted down the area with approximately 30 gallons of water to protect against re-ignition.
The fire appears to have originated by the ignition of paper materials that were attac
