Holiday hinders council ratification of labour agreement
Logistics are standing in the way of city council ratifying the tentative agreement with striking city workers (CUPE Local 2262), according to Mayor Lawrence Chernoff.
“I have three councillors out of town for the holiday,” Chernoff said. “For a vote like this, we can only have one councillor participating on the phone or electronically, according to legislation – and it’s important everyone participates in this.
“There’s not much we can do about it when so many people are out of province – I apologize for that, but it’s out of my hands.”
He said they hope to be able to call a vote next week, adding council is anxious to see this situation resolved right away.
“We’ll do the very best we can, as quickly as possible,” he said.
No matter how it plays it out, he said, he’s hoping for a new tenor among city council/management /staff.
“I know that we’re going to move forward in a spirit of healing and cooperation,” he said.
