With afternoons getting darker, a sobering election result in our neighbouring nation, and not much snow in sight yet, we need a bit of distraction. Fortunately, there’s a lot of that coming up — Rossland will be able to escape to several fun film events and other good things soon.
The Rossland Mountain Film Festival begins on November 16 and goes until Novbember 20, with events at the Flying Steamshovel, the Old Fire Hall, and more. On November 19, the Rossland REEL Youth Film Festival 2016 starts at 2:00 pm at the Flying Steamshovel. And on December 1, the film “Hadwins’s Judgement” will show at 7:00 pm at the Old Fire Hall. For the details, read on.
About the Rossland Mountain Film Festival, sponsored by Teck; here’s the press release from the RMFF folks:
“The Teck Rossland Mountain Film Festival is set to celebrate its eighteenth year of festivities this November with the annual festival running from Wednesday the 16th to Sunday the 20th in Rossland, BC. The Rossland Mountain Film Festival (RMFF) Society has been very fortunate to have Teck Trail Operation’s support over the years as the Platinum and Title Sponsor of the festival.
“The 2016 festival will be bringing in some incredible talent, including films and entertainment from Fernie, Nelson, Whistler, and of course, Rossland. Not to mention the Maglio’s Saturday Night Main Event Showcase Film from Teton Gravity Research, “Tight & Loose.” The intense ski film “Canvas” by Blank Collective will open up this year’s festival on Wednesday night at the Flying Steamshovel.
“Burrrlapz, the Movie – a family-friendly version – will premier at the Old Fire Hall for the Thursday All Ages Show by donation to the Rossland Food Bank and sponsored by Columbia Basin Trust and the members of the Nelson & District Credit Union.
“This event will be followed by a brand new “Dirtbag Night” where retro ski outfits are strongly encouraged (there will be prizes), and only films found on VHS are welcome! The Whiskey Jacks will be entertaining the crowd and food and drink supplied by NoVega Fine Foods and Rossland Beer Company.
“RMFF has also secured one of only two Canadian showings of Powder Magazine’s major film, “Monumental: Skiing our National Parks,” for the Teck Mountain Gala on Friday night at the Old Fire Hall. Altitude Entertainment will be hosting the prohibition theme (but not rule!) event, costumes fully recommended, and entertainment by Sexton Blake and DJ RSK. With wine tasting by Columbia Gardens Vineyard & Winery and appetizers by Rossland’s own John Premier of Premier Chef Services, it’s going to be a very classy affair!
“Saturday is packed with events starting with a Video Game Development workshop with Sean Smillie – more than 15 years experience in the industry – at the Rossland Museum at 11am and sponsored by Beep Beep Driving School. The workshop is suitable for teenagers or older and by donation to the Museum. Following the workshop, the Museum’s Cominco Theatre will be playing “Fire on the Mountain: Story of the 10th Mountain Division,” also by donation.”
About RCAC’s REEL Youth Film Festival:
“The Rossland Council for Arts & Culture is hosting the 10th Annual REEL Youth Film Festival (RYFF) at the Flying Steamshovel for all ages, starting at 2pm. The 2016 RYFF showcases films from Denmark, Russia, Taiwan, Thailand, Canada, US, and the UK alongside Indigenous communities from BC, Yukon, and Northwest Territories.
“Saturday will finish off with the Maglio’s Saturday Night Main Event at the Prestige Mountain Resort, featuring the Moontricks and the musical stylings of DJ InnCourageable and hosted by Mitchell Scott. The event will showcase many films vying for this year’s Aaron Allibone People’s Choice Award.
“The final day of the festival (November 20) starts at 1pm in the Prestige presented by Powderhound Sports with support from Gabriella’s Restaurants. The showcase film is Jérémie Heitz’sfilm, “La Liste” – charting the progression of steep skiing in the alps from its beginnings through to showing how today’s legends are pushing the sport.
“A longstanding Kootenay tradition, the Teck Rossland Mountain Film Festival is committed to presenting the latest, greatest, big-budget flicks alongside homegrown, roots-based, independent films.
“The Rossland Mountain Film Festival began in 1999 by a group of locals looking to create a signature event to generate enthusiasm for adventure sports and celebrate and promote mountain culture and the upcoming ski and snowboard season. The Festival showcases the work of Kootenay filmmakers, photographers, and artists and offers professional and skill development workshops. This event attracts approximately 900 visitors and locals to five days of programmed events that focus on film, visual arts, music, and multi-media productions.”
About “Hadwin’s Judgment”: Thursday, December 1, at the Old Fire Hall, 7:00 pm
“A spellbinding account of environmentalism, obsession, and myth, Hadwin’s Judgement chronicles BC logging engineer and survivalist Grant Hadwin’s emotional crusade to alert us all to the egregious devastation wrought by clear-cutting on the world’s last great temperate rainforest. His journey ends with a shocking, illegal act—a tragic mystery and a prophetic warning.
Tickets available at the door: $15 general admission, $12 EcoSociety Members & Students (with student ID)”
