Police/Selkirk College cracking down on abuse of campus
Ongoing issues with non-students abusing the Trail Selkirk College campus have both police and college authorities working to address the issue, according to Trail RCMP Sgt. Mike Wicentowich.
He said this, most recent, response is due to an incident Friday.
“On March 1, Trail and Greater District RCMP Detachment responded to a call for assistance with a male and female screaming and arguing at Selkirk College in downtown Trail,” he said. “The pair (was) asked to leave, as they were disturbing the peace of people attending the college for legitimate purposes as well as not being patrons themselves.
“There have been a number of incidents at Selkirk College and the RCMP is working with Selkirk College to reduce these types of incidents. The RCMP will be investigating and pursuing trespassing charges when appropriate and in cooperation with Selkirk College to ensure that it remains an accessible, peaceful and safe place for its many patrons.”
He said it’s not uncommon for RCMP to get complaints of people on campus behaving poorly despite having no legitimate cause for being there in the first place – using drugs, getting in altercations, refusing to leave, and so forth.
He said problems
“The college has provided police a form telling people they are no longer welcome on college grounds, and we will serve these notices (to people who are creating issues,” he said. “If they return to the college without legitimate purposes, we’ll be pursuing trespassing charges.
“We’re really trying to maintain the peace and protect that facility for students, staff, seniors – everyone who attends the college campus with correct cause.”
