Disasters facing our communities, our economies and our businesses are becoming a real possibility and we need to be ready.

Emergency and economic resilience planning is becoming an essential focus for communities and Community Futures Central Kootenay (CFCK) wants to teach you how to prepare, respond and recover.

CFCK hosted a Community Economic Development Forum April 8 and 9 in Castlegar. The focus was on Natural Disasters and brought together experts who have helped businesses and communities through recent natural disasters, including flood and wildfire. Almost 70 people from the Kootenay/Boundary region attended the event.

Representatives who have had to recover from floods and fires in their community were there to discuss impacts and decisions made after their community was impacted.

Based on event feedback, CFCK will be offering training for Business Continuity Planning, which will teach businesses how to be prepared in the case of a natural disaster in order to minimize the impact on their business and position themselves for recovery. CFCK is also interested in working with communities to support the development of Community Economic Recovery plans, to help communities be better prepared for the ‘new norm’.
