A local woman sustained burns Friday morning after a blaze in South Castlegar Friday morning, according to Castlegar Fire Chief Sam Lattanzio.

“CFD attended a structure fire in the 3400 block of 8 Avenue Friday morning,” he said, adding the call came in at 11:17 a.m. “CFD arrived and established command on scene at 11:25 a.m. with Engine 1 and Command 1.

“There was significant fire and heat damage at the origin of the fire and contained to that portion of the home. There was also heavy smoke damage throughout the home. The fire was under control within 35 minutes and the fire cause is under investigation, however no foul play is suspected. The home was turned over to the property owners at 2:40 p.m.”

He said CFD had eight firefighters respond with two Engines and Squad 1. BCAS, RCMP, Fortis Power and Gas and Public Works also attended the scene.

“There was one occupant and pet dog home at the time of the fire but managed to escape, however the occupant did sustain some first and second degree burns,” he said. The occupant was treated and checked out by BCAS on scene. ESS/Red Cross also attended and arranged for the needs of the occupants and pet.”

He said the fire started in a basement kitchen of the single-family dwelling.

“We’re pretty confident this was related to a cooking incident,” he said. “Cooking fires are one of the top causes of house fires. One of the things that sort of mitigated it was that the door to the basement kitchen was closed – the occupant of the home had the presence of mind to close the door behind them and call 911.”

Damage is significant and estimated at roughly $200,000.
