While renovations continue at The Bailey Theatre, the Trail & District Arts Council wants to keep people entertained with the burlesque, cabaret, dream play “Josephine” at the Rossland Miners’ Hall on Oct. 11 – 12.

“Josephine” is a one-woman biographical musical that combines cabaret, theatre, and dance to tell the astounding story of one of the most remarkable figures of the 20th Century, the iconic burlesque performer Josephine Baker. The first African American international superstar, she performed in men’s clothing before the term “drag” was commonly used and was ground-breaking, both on and off the stage. Josephine was a spy for the French Resistance in WWII, a civil rights activist, and mother to twelve adopted children. Her relationships included multiple interracial marriages, and same-sex partnerships, in a time when both were taboo.

“Josephine” is played by the astounding Tymisha Harris, who has been performing professionally for over 20 years in musicals, dance troops, and as a choreographer and backup dancer for groups including N*SYNC. The show has won multiple Best of the Fest awards, as well as awards for Tymisha’s performance, and is an intimate, charming, and haunting cabaret that shatters stereotypes of race, gender roles, and sexuality.

Recommended for audiences 19+ as there is some nudity.

Following on will be “The Comic Strippers – Fully Clothed,” a stripped down two-person version of The Comic Strippers improv comedy troupe show on Oct. 13 and 14. Then rounding out the shows the following week is the “Marc Atkinson Trio with Cameron Wilson” on October 20 and 21, featuring the skilled acoustic guitarist, Marc Atkinson.

All tickets are $25 and are available by calling 250-368-9669 or going online to thebailey.ca. Numbers for each show limited to 100 people and double vaccination proof with QR code required.

All shows start at 7:30 pm. Upcoming shows will operate under the current Public Health Orders, including the wearing of masks, physical distancing, and proof of vaccinations.

Our programs are made possible by funding support from the BC Arts Council, the Government of British Columbia, and the BC Touring Council. This project is funded [in part] by the Government of Canada. / Ce projet est financé [en partie] par le gouvernement du Canada.
