Update to alleged Attempted Murder of a Police Officer

On Dec. 5, 2022, Francis Paradis DOB: 1993-06-18 of Montreal Quebec had an Information sworn against him with the following updated list of criminal charges:

 

  • Count #1 Section 244(2)(a) CC – Discharge prohib firearm with intent to wound, main or disfigure or endanger life or to prevent arrest or detention
  • Count #2 Section 239(1)(a) CC – Attempted Murder
  • Count #3 Section 244(2)(a) CC – Discharge prohib firearm with intent to wound, main or disfigure or endanger life or to prevent arrest or detention
  • Count #4 Section 117.01(1) CC – Possess a firearm while prohibited
  • Count #5 Section 95(1) CC – Possess a firearm while prohibited
  • Count #6 Section 92(1) CC – Possession of firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized
  • Count #7 Section 270.01(1)(a) – Assault with a Weapon

Trail and Greater District RCMP are providing an update regarding an incident which occurred on Oct. 25, 2022

On Oct 26, 2022, Francis Paradis (29) of Quebec was charged with the following counts in relation to the shooting that occurred around midnight on Oct. 25, 2022.

  • Discharging a Firearm with Intent contrary to Section 244 of the Criminal Code
  • Possession of a Firearm Contrary to an Order contrary to Section 117.01 of the Criminal Code
  • Assaulting a Police Officer with a Weapon contrary to Section 270.01 of the Criminal Code
  • Possession of Prohibited Firearm with Ammunition contrary to Section 95(1) of the Criminal Code
  • Possession of a Firearm Knowing Its Possession is Unauthorized contrary to Section 92(1) of the Criminal Code

Mr. Paradis was remanded in custody and will make his next appearance by video in Provincial Court, in Rossland, BC.

On Oct. 25, at 11:48 p.m., two frontline Trail and Greater District RCMP officers responded to a 29-year-old man from Quebec, who was behaving erratically and attempted to enter the Trail Ambulance Station in the 1100 block of Hospital Bench Road in Trail, according to Trail lRCMP Sgt. Mike Wicentowich.

“The two RCMP officers located the man standing in a dark area just outside of the ambulance station. As the officers engaged in verbal de-escalation with the man, he allegedly fired several rounds from a handgun at the two officers and three nearby paramedics.

“The officers utilized a conducted energy weapon to physically subdue the man. The officers took the man into custody without further incident. No one was injured during this event.”

The 29-year-old Quebec man has been remanded on several firearms charges until his first appearance by video in Rossland Provincial Court on Nov. 2, 2022.

Trail and Greater District RCMP continue to investigate the incident and will be recommending additional criminal charges including Attempted Murder contrary to Section 239 of the Criminal Code to BC Prosecution Services, Wicentowich said.

“I am thankful that no one was hurt or killed in this incident. I would like to commend the bravery of the officers and paramedics who risk their lives and safety in the line of duty during a potentially deadly situation.”
