Fire destroys Saint Jude’s Anglican Church in Greenwood
The City of Greenwood lost a historical building Thursday night when the 123-year-old St. Jude Anglican Church was destroyed by fire.
The City of Greenwood said three buildings and a garage were lost in the fire and damage to some surrounding homes and infrastructure also occurred.
The City declined further comments until the fire has been fully investigated.
“We ask the public to please not speculate and allow emergency services to do their jobs and collect the facts surrounding this fire,” the media statement said.
Bishop Lynne McNaughton of the Anglican Diocese of Kootenay said the loss of Saint Jude’s is a blow to the Anglican community and a sad day for the people of Greenwood.
“Not only was it a testament to our shared history, but as one of the oldest buildings in Greenwood, it has been a place for worship and community since 1901,” Bishop Lynne McNaughton said.
The City of Greenwood extended thanks to members of the local volunteer fire department as well as assisting firefighters from Midway and the City of Grand Forks.
“We would also like to thank the RCMP, BC Ambulance Service, Fortis, and the Greenwood Public Works staff for all the contributions they made to keep people safe and assist on the fire suppression efforts.”
Greenwood, with a population of approximately 700, is located in the Southern Interior of BC approximately 30 minutes west of Grand Forks on Highway 3.
The Saint Jude’s Anglican Church was built in 1901.
“(We are) thankful that there was no loss of life, and our hearts go out to the person who lost their home,” the Anglican Diocese of Kootenay said.
Saint Jude’s Anglican Church was a place for worship and community since 1901.
