Friday sees six-vehicle collision in Kinnaird Bridge
On May 3, 2024 just after 2 p.m., Castlegar RCMP received a report of a motor vehicle collision on the Hwy 3 Kinnaird Bridge east of Castlegar, according to detachment commander Sgt. Monty Taylor. Upon police attendance it was determined six vehicles were involved in the collision.
The highway was closed in both directions while emergency services including RCMP, Castlegar Fire, BC Ambulance and KERPA attended to the six injured drivers. Three drivers were transported to hospital for their injuries and all drivers are expected to make a recovery.
An alternate route to ensure the movement of traffic was established through the City of Castlegar. With the volume of traffic, especially on a Friday afternoon, this caused significant delays however given the safety of those involved and the required police investigation was necessary. The highway remained closed until just after 8 p.m. while RCMP continued their investigation which included the attendance of collision reconstructionist.
It appears the driver of one of the east bound vehicles did not anticipate slower moving traffic on the highway and rear ended a vehicle in front of them. This caused a chain reaction of vehicle being pushed into one another with one of the vehicles being pushed into the opposite lane of traffic causing a head on collision.
Castlegar RCMP are continuing their investigation and are asking anyone with information or dash cam footage pertaining the collision to call the RCMP at (250)365-7721.
