Trail Air Cadets compete in local Effective Speaking Competition
On March 3, three cadets from 531 City of Trail Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron competed in the first step of the Air Cadet League of Canada’s effective speaking competition. The first step is the local competition which is followed by competition for the Kootenays, then a provincial competition for B.C. and finally a national competition.
The cadets who competed in the local competition were Arthav Chaudhary, Joachim Aquino and Linnea Lawder.
Three members of the Castlegar Sentinel Speakers Toastmaster Club, Justin Hardy, Gary Giles and Pallavi Shetty were the judges. The competition was organized by Krista Fontes and Sandrina Kembel of the 531 Trail Air Cadet Squadron Sponsoring Committee.
The winner of the local competition was Linnea Lawder. Linnea will compete in the Kootenay competition on March 13. The winner of the Kootenay competition will compete in the provincial competition in April in Vancouver.
In the months leading up the local competition the cadets worked with squadron volunteer Mark Sirges to develop their skill.
531 Squadron meets every Wednesday evening in the Kemball (Trail) Armoury at 1990 7th Ave, starting at 6:15pm.
New cadets are welcome at any time. Cadets are between the ages of 12 and 18. New cadets can start their application at https://registration.cadets.gc.ca/get-started.html
Adults who would like to volunteer with the squadron are also welcome.

- The Cadet Program is open to all Canadian youth from the ages of 12 to 18 regardless of income, race, religion, culture or other socio-economic factors. The program embraces Canada’s multiculturalism and offers young Canadian’s opportunities to interact with youth from other cultures.
- During the summer the cadets can attend summer training at locations across the country.
- Over the training year cadets can travel, go flying in powered and unpowered aircraft and do outdoor activities.
- The 2025-26 training year marks 531 squadron’s 75th Anniversary. The squadron was formed on 02 March 1951.
