Who says it's hard being Green? Lone Sheep welcomes The Nelson Daily!

This week, we’re proud to announce the latest addition to the Lone Sheep family of newspapers: The Nelson Daily. Owned and operated by Tim Schafer and Bruce Fuhr, both formerly of the now-defunct Nelson Daily News and Peter Sheets formerly of the Trail Rossland News, the new Nelson Daily promises to be a vital and vigorous replacement for that publication and an important addition to the civic, recreational, and cultural life of Nelson, BC.
Here at Lone Sheep, we’re proud to assist Tim, Bruce and Peter in their new venture. We encourage you to check the paper out and let your Nelson and Slocan Valley friends and colleagues know about it. Tim and Bruce bring over forty years of journalistic experience to this project, and they’ve already loaded the site with a ton of great content, to be updated…daily.
When Black Press bought and then immediately shut down the century-old Nelson Daily News a couple of months ago, it looked for a while as though Nelson would be condemned to a future of having only one full service newspaper to call its own.
Thankfully, this will not be the case. There will continue to be a plurality of voices in Nelson — including, from now on, a locally-owned and environmentally-responsible one. In fact, across the West Kootenay there are now two clear choices: all the remaining print papers are owned by the Victoria-based Black Press chain while all the online newspapers are part of the locally-owned Lone Sheep network. Local and Green or non-local and non-Green. We like to think, for readers and advertisers alike, that it’s an easy choice.
In the words of the owners, their new venture is, “created within Nelson, written, researched and delivered in a style that reflects what West Kootenay people need to know – on a daily basis. The Nelson Daily is committed to that ideal, bringing you news from City Hall, the Regional District of Central Kootenay, from the world of sports, the area’s vibrant arts scene and everything in between, every day, any time, from anywhere that matters to Nelsonites.”
Events listings, classifieds, obituaries: everything you expect to find in a traditional newspaper…and much more.
Needless to say, The Nelson Daily will be a full part of the Lone Sheep West Kootenay news network, along with The Boundary Sentinel, The Castlegar Source, and The Rossland Telegraph. From now on, readers of those papers will be able to see important Nelson stories featured in our other papers’ regional sections, or simply click on a link and go to the paper itself. And vice versa.
Here at Lone Sheep we believe the future will be local and that it’s important for folks in Grand Forks to know what’s going on in Nelson, and for Nelsonites to be aware of initiatives and news in Rossland and Castlegar. The more we know about each other, the more we can get together, support one another, and build a brighter tomorrow for this amazing region we all know and love.
