No development imminent for McDonald's Landing now that it is an RDCK property: Mickel

With the acquisition of McDonald’s Landing on the North Shore now complete, there are no immediate plans to develop or repair any of the popular recreation spot’s facilities, says the area’s director.

Area F’s Ron Mickel said the historical piece of property is now in the hands of the regional district, preserved from the clutches of any private developers that could have stepped in and bought the land when the federal government announced they wanted to divest themselves of the property.

Regional District of Central Kootenay Area F director Ron Mickel confirmed that Mcdonald’s Landing was officially transferred at no cost from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans to the RDCK recently.

“There was a lot of interest in the community (in acquiring the property) and everyone now seems happy,” he said.

He said the small craft harbour located at Six Mile on the North Shore — which once was a main spot on the West Arm of Kootenay Lake for paddle wheelers to tie up — had been on the federal government’s list for years for divesture.

Last month regional district staff put together a purpose statement for development of the former Crown land site.

That sounds more ambitious than it really is, said Mickel, because there won’t be any development done on the site at this time. Any investigation into what could be repaired or upgraded will be looked at in one year when a budget is written up for the site.

Mickel said one change might occur: The Nelson Youth Sailing Club is interested in repairing part of the wharf that was damaged, and then use the piece for their program, based out of the McDonald’s Landing area.

Mickel brought the item to the Jan. 6 regional parks commission meeting and it was before the board on Jan. 27. The regional district had to act on it fairly quickly, he said, because the DFO had some money ($10,000) in their budget for repairs.

The DFO will replace all of the woodwork above the waterline, prior to giving it to the RDCK. Right now Mcdonald Landing is a very substantial dock, catwalk and pilings.
