Municipal leaders from across Canada gathered in Nelson today

Over 100 delegates from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities were in Nelson today for one of their regular board meetings, with preparations for parliament on the menu.
The FCM represents the interests of its 2,000 member municipalities on policy issues that are handled at the federal level.
During the scheduled meetings, board members will discuss municipal priorities including the development of a federal long-term infrastructure plan and the upcoming federal budget.
“We are looking forward to providing a forum for discussion, right here in Nelson, for issues of concern to municipalities all across Canada,” said Nelson Mayor John Dooley.
FCM Board meetings are held three times a year — with three days of meetings expected in Nelson, wrapping up Saturday — in various member communities.
The City of Nelson and the Regional District of Central Kootenay went through an extensive, three-year selection process to be able to host the meeting.
“This is a prestigious event, and we are extremely excited that Nelson was chosen,” said Mayor Dooley, who is currently serving his fifth term on the FCM’s board of directors. “We are looking forward to welcoming delegates to the region. It’s a great opportunity to showcase local and regional talent, innovation and ideas.”
The City of Nelson will host several events for delegates, including a local harvest welcome reception, which will feature food and drink from Nelson and across the Kootenays.
Delegates will have their choice of tours of local attractions, and will be treated to performances by local talent, including the Nelson Rhythm Ropers and the Moving Mosaic Samba Band.
