Free CPR courses available in Castlegar, Trail Nov. 19

Would you know what to do if someone collapsed right in front of you?
Of course, call 9-1-1, but what about those critical moments spent waiting for the ambulance? Performing CPR and defibrillation within one to two minutes of a cardiac arrest helps to increase survival rates to 90 per cent, but that rate plummets to 30 per cent after just seven minutes.
This is why staff and instructors at St. John Ambulance are volunteering their time to host Community CPR Days in Castlegar and Trail Nov. 19, offering free CPR courses and certification to anyone within the region who pre-registers.
“Cardiac Arrest is treatable, but remains the leading cause of death in Canada,” said branch administrator Kyra Hoggan. “Statistics show that 80 per cent of all cardiac arrests happen in the home, so our goal is to have at least one person in every household trained in CPR.”
The St. John Ambulance CPR course teaches the signs, symptoms and treatment for cardiac arrest, stroke and heart attack, and includes first aid for choking.
