Tainted cocaine being sold in area

Trail RCMP Sgt. Rob Hawton is warning area drug users to be hyper-vigilant about their drug supply, after two area people suffered heart attacks.
“On April 18, Trail and Greater District RCMP received a report of two people, both under 30 years of age, admitted to hospital recently with heart attacks linked to the ingestion of cocaine,” he said. “Further investigation revealed that, in the case of one of the individuals, the cause was likely due to prolonged use of cocaine, where heart attack is a possible side effect.
“In the other case, however, it is believed that the substance purported to be cocaine was not, in fact, cocaine but something else similar in form. There is no indication at this time what this substance might be. There have been no other cases reported to date.”
Hawton was unable to confirm which communities the victims came from, and said all area resident involved in cocaine use should be on their guard.
“Police want to remind users of illicit drugs of the dangers involved when taking something that is unregulated and from unknown sources,” he said. “As can be seen, the consequences can be quite severe.”
Both victims remain in hospital.
