NPD officers take down man brandishing a knife and scissors

Nelson City Police arrested a man brandishing a knife and scissors Friday afternoon in a bizarre incident that started at the Ministry of Children and Families and Mental Health office on Victoria Street and ending near the Lakeside Soccer Fields.

The incident started at 1:25 p.m. (October 12) when Nelson City Police was alerted to a male causing a disturbance at the office of the Ministry of Children and Families and Mental Health in the government building on Victoria Street.

Before police arrived the man fled the scene toward Baker Street.

Police located the man, but before an arrest could be made he took off running.

Nelson police then received a call the same man was at Nelson Courthouse yelling and swearing at lawyers in the waiting area.

The man once again ran away before being located by a bylaw officer at the Prestige Inn, where he began making threats with a knife.

When police arrived, the man had fled the scene, taking a phone from the spa at the Prestige Inn and running toward the parking lot of the Chahko Mika Mall.

Nelson City Police intercepted the man, who took off toward the soccer fields now with a pair of scissors.

It was near the fields officers used a police vehicle to disarm the man by knocking him down.

The male was transported to Kootenay Lake Hospital to be assessed by a doctor under the Mental Health Act. 

He is facing 12 charges of threatening, causing a disturbance, and theft.

Intoxicated male collared for meat theft at Kootenay Co-op

At approximately 3:10 p.m. Saturday (October 13), staff at Kootenay Co-op flagged a Nelson patrol car down after workers noticed a male inside the store hiding meat in his clothes.

Before police could attend, the 43-year-old had fled the store without paying for the product.

He was located in the north lane of the 400 block of Baker Street and taken into custody.

It was determined the male had been drinking.

The man was held until he was sober then released on a Promise to Appear with a court date set for January 8th, 2012.

Two charged with assault after Saturday morning altercation

Two people have been charged with assault after an incident early Saturday (October 13) morning at the corner of Ward and Baker Street.

Police responded to a call at 2:56 a.m., finding the victim with severe facial injuries.

The injured person was transported to Kootenay Lake Hospital by BC Ambulance.

Two suspects were identified, but one fled on foot.

The other, a 21-year-old female, was arrested at the scene.

The 29-year-old male was located later.

Both have now been charged with Assault Causing Bodily Harm and released on a Promise to Appear with conditions and a first appearance in court set for December 4th, 2012.
