UPDATED: Coroners release name of Castlegar four-year-old killed in ATV accident

The BC Coroner Service has released the name of a four-year-old boy killed in an ATV accident west of Nelson Sunday.

He was Isaac Robert Zukowski, of Castlegar.

The Zukowski family has been notified.

The Coroners Service extends its condolences to the family and friends of this young boy.

Few details are being released following the tragic accident Sunday afternoon on a Forest Service Road west of Nelson that killed a four-year-old boy.

RCMP Staff Sergeant Dan Seibel said Tuesday the accident investigation has now been turned over to the B.C. Coroner’s office.

“The B.C. Coroner is going to be the lead agency in this accident,” Seibel confirmed.

RCMP, BC Ambulance and Nelson Search and Rescue responded to a call of an ATV (All-Terrain Vehicle) accident on Mid-Slope Forest Service Road — a spur road off Rover Creek Forest Road — west of Nelson Sunday at 2 p.m.

The driver of the 2012 Can/Am 1000 Quad and his four-year-old stepson passenger were traveling on the Mid-Slope Forest Service Road when the ATV hit a water drainage ditch that crossed the road.

The ATV flipped end-to-end before landing on top of the driver and passenger.

A doctor who happened to be in the area pronounced the four-year-old boy deceased at the scene.

Seibel said Nelson Search and Rescue along with B.C. Ambulance managed to get a helicopter into the accident scene to airlift the injured 33-year-old man to Trail Airport.

The man was then transported to Trail Regional Hospital with a broken lower back, broken right leg and right wrist as well as internal injuries.

The name of the deceased boy is being withheld at this time.

The RCMP victim services helping by providing support to the family as well as the first responders that were at the scene.

“This is something that sadly happened,” Seibel said.

“There’s no criminal charges or no criminal negligence here it’s just a tragic event that happened (Sunday afternoon).”

Mid-Slope Forest Service Road is located approximately five kilometers from the base of Rover Creek Forest Service Road at the west end of Blewett Road above B.C. Hydro’s Kootenay Canal.

Four-year-old dead following ATV accident west of Nelson

Nelson RCMP is reporting a four-year-old boy has died in ATV accident Sunday afternoon on the Mid-Slope Forest Service Road west of Nelson.

The accident happened at approximately 2 p.m. Sunday (October 7) when the ATV driver, travelling with his four-year-old step son, hit a water drainage ditch on the forest service roadway.

The ATV flipped end over end before landing onto the two occupants.

The 33-year-old driver suffered serious back injuries.

However, a medical doctor at the scene pronounced that the four-year-old died from injuries.

Both occupants were wearing helmets.

RCMP along with BC Ambulance responded to the accident.

The man was flown to Trail Airport. 

It was later determined that the 33-year-old driver suffered a broken lower back, broken right leg and right wrist as well as internal injuries.

Mid-Slope Forest Service Road is located approximately five kilometers from the base of Rover Creek Forest Service Road at the west end of Blewett Road above B.C. Hydro’s Kootenay Canal.

The B.C. Coroner’s Service and Nelson RCMP are continuing their investigation. 

Police Victim Services are providing assistance and support to those impacted in this tragic event.
