Shambhala announces purchase of the Savoy Inn

First it was the pub tenant in the former Savoy Inn Hotel.
Then a fire closed the restaurant and the hostel shut down.
Toss in the Esso gas station pulling up shop and the new owners closing down the Nelson Daily News in the 200 block of the street and the most western part of Baker Street was looking a might bit sketchy.
However, in 2014 200 Baker Street is going to start to rebound after the operators of Shambhala announced the purchase of the Savoy Inn building.
“Our vision is to give Nelson another layer of awesome,” said Executive Producer Corrine Zawaduk in a statement Tuesday.
“The new Savoy will be a great addition to an amazing town.”
Zawaduk said Shambhala plans to bring together what it does best: music, fabulous food, accommodations and a distinctive cultural character.
“Destined to be on the roadmap of travelling musicians, artists and performers, the (yet to be named) Savoy Inn will provide a world-class venue for the arts in the Kootenays,” the statement said, adding the new digs will be vibrant addition to Nelson and create 50 full and part time jobs.
“The entire building will be remodeled to bring a new flavor to the west end of Baker Street. Working with the City of Nelson, the Police and neighbors, Shambhala’s goal is to enhance the cultural richness of our community.”
The project is set to begin in 2014. Which is music to the ears of Nelson Mayor John Dooley.
“The proposed redevelopment for the building on the corner of the 100 block of Baker and Falls St. will be key to rejuvenating lower Baker and the Railtown district,” said Dooley.
“I am looking forward to seeing a development proposal.”
