Swim advisory closes Taghum Beach to water users

For the second straight year the Regional District of Central Kootenay has issued a swim advisory for the popular recreation hotspot of Taghum Beach.
RDCK Regional Parks Operations Supervisor Gary Gaynor made the announcement in a press release Friday.
“Beach water quality is poor — Swimming is not recommended due to bacterial counts that exceed Health Canada guide lines,” Gaynor said.
Taghum Beach was closed for the same reason in July of 2012.
Gaynor said the RDCK collects water samples on a weekly basis at Taghum Beach.
Samples are analyzed for fecal coliform bacteria (E. coli) to guard against swimmers being linked to illness.
“Swimming in water with unacceptable bacteria levels can increase the risk of ear, nose, throat infection and stomach illness,” Gaynor explained.
The RDCK has posted signage at Taghum Beach warning the public of the water conditions.
The warnings remain until samples once again fall into the acceptable range.
Until this time the RDCK recommends the public refrains from swimming at Taghum Beach.
