RDCK issues advisory to Slocan residents after slides cause turbidity in water system

The Regional District of Central Kootenay has issued an advisory for Slocan City residents to conserve water after slides on Gwillim Creek caused turbidity inthe water system.
“We had a slide of sand and mud into Gwillim Creek, where Slocan gets its water from, and Mulvy Creek, that flows into Gwillim,” said Brian Carruthers Chief Administrative Officer Regional District of Central Kootenay.
“We think it happened due intense rains from (Friday).”
Carruthers said city staff now needs to clean the reservoir to remove all of the sediment that flowed in due to the slides.
The slides also muddied the Slocan River so RDCK is advising residents that obtain water from that source to be aware of turbidity.
Carruthers said the slides caused a brief concern debris in the creeks block the flow of the water.
However, officials have ruled out any dams forming due to the slides.
“Our main concern was that slides can obstruct the creek but we checked it out and both creeks are flowing freely,” Carruthers said.
