Back by popular demand, the CP Holiday Train comes to Nelson and Castlegar

It’s only October, but Nelsonites should clear (Wednesday) December 11 on the calendar for the Canadian Pacific Holiday Train.
Following stops in Creston during the morning and Castlegar at 3:45 p.m., the Holiday Train makes its way back to the Heritage City for a 6:45 p.m. stop at Lakeside Park.
The 2013 CP Holiday Train program launches on November 25 in Kahnawake, Quebec, formally kicking off the three-week journey of two brightly decorated trains across Canada and the United States.
The Canadian train will wrap up its journey December 16 in Port Coquitlam.
Since the Holiday Train program first launched in 1999, it has raised $7.4 million and 3 million pounds of food for local communities.
The last time the Holiday Train stopped in Nelson was in 2011, raising $3000 for local food banks.
Since the program’s inception back in 1999, more than $5.6 million and over 2.45 million pounds of food has been collected in Canada and the United States.
At each event, the Holiday Train provides a box car stage and a corporate contribution to the local food bank.
All the money raised stays in the community.
Each Holiday Train consists of 14 brightly decorated railcars, including a modified boxcar that has been turned into a traveling stage for performers. For the 15th year, CP’s elves have updated the thousands of LED lights that adorn the sides of both trains with new holiday designs.
