Busy Friday for Nelson Police Department

Alcohol-related calls kept Nelson Police Department members busy for most of Friday.

At 11 p.m. (October 4) NPD members noticed a vehicle driving at excessive speed in the 700 block of Vernon Street, pull a U-turn before stopping in a no-parking zone.

Officers stopped and approached the driver, who appeared to be under the influence of alcohol.

The male driver refused to provide a breath sample of his breath and began filming the members during the impounding of the vehicle.

The man was arrested and charged with obstructing a police officer and will answer to those charges December 3 in Nelson Court. 

The vehicle was impounded for 30 days and the man’s license suspended for 90 days under the provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act.  

Drug trafficker in wrong place at wrong time

During the Friday morning rush hour (9 a.m.) on Baker Street, and off-duty officer noticed an individual in the 400 block Baker Street that he knew was banned from the area for trafficking drugs. 

The member remained and spoke with the male while an on duty NPD officer attended to investigate the matter further. 

The 24-year-old male is facing charges of breach of his probation and possession of a controlled substance.

Foot patrol members remove partiers from Cottonwood Park

Friday (October 4) at 11:25 a.m. Nelson Police foot patrol officers located several people drinking in Cottonwood Falls Park.

All were cooperative and disposed of their liquor immediately.

Police warned the group about the fine ($230) for public consumption of liquor.

The group was escorted out of the park.

Bystanders assist police in catching Intoxicated shoplifter

Monday afternoon (October 1) at 3:25 p.m., Nelson Police dispatchers received a 9-1-1 report of a female being assaulted in the 500 block Herridage Lane. 

At the same time another caller reported a theft in progress from a business in the 400-block of Baker Street.

When Nelson Police members arrived they found two males holding a female down. 

The woman had allegedly shoplifted from one downtown business and while staff was searched for the thief, another business had items stolen.

After a foot pursuit the woman was caught in the 500 block Herridage Lane.  

Before police arrived the woman bit one person and kicked the other, causing minor injuries to both.

The 24-year-old was taken into custody and transported to NPD cells until sober.

She was then released and will have to answer to charges of theft and assault. All the stolen property was located and returned.
