The Regional District of Central Kootenay has said no thanks to a proposal by the City of Nelson to move to its 310 Ward Street location.

The decision to stay in its current digs on Lakeside Drive on the Nelson waterfront was made during the monthly RDCK board meeting Thursday.

“The concept of the two local governments and the Province being located in a common building has merit and was considered; however, the cost to the RDCK to sell our building and move our entire operation to 310 Ward outweighed the suggested benefits,” said John Kettle, Chair of the RDCK Board.

The City of Nelson made a pitch to regional district board members at the October 17 meeting to move in with the city in the multi-storied White Building at the corner of Ward and Vernon.

The building sits on 2.5 acres.

RDCK staff, as well as an independent consultant, reviews the proposal.

Results of both reviews indicated that the benefits of remaining at the 202 Lakeside facilities outweighed the proposed benefits of relocating to 310 Ward Street.

The review said the current RDCK office provides convenient and effective service to the public.

The report also said with some minor renovations and the purchase of new workstations, the 202 Lakeside Drive location would provide high-quality, cost-effective office space for the RDCK for the foreseeable future with no impact on taxpayers.
