Evironment Canada has issued a Special Air Quality advisory for the southern areas of the province, including Boundary and Kootenay regions Thursday due to the smoky skies in the area.

The advisory was made in collaboration with the Interior Health Authority and Environment Canada.

“In addition to local smoke from forest fires that continue to burn in the regions, those areas are being affected by transboundary smoke from forest fires south of the border,” the media release said.

“Smoke concentrations will vary widely as winds, fire behaviour and temperatures change.

The statement said people should avoid strenuous outdoor activities.

“If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, contact your health care provider: difficulty in breathing, chest pain or discomfort, and sudden onset of cough or irritation of airways.”

“Exposure is particularly a concern for infants, the elderly and those who have underlying medical conditions such as diabetes, and lung or heart disease.

This advisory will remain in effect until further notice.
