HAVE YOUR SAY ON SEWAGE:   Regional District Seeks Input on Future of Sewage Treatment in Greater Trail system

The Regional District of Kootenay Boundary is in the process of solidifying a long-term plan for sewage management in the Greater Trail area.  The RDKB’s current sewage treatment facility, the Columbia Pollution Control Centre, was built in the 1970s and is in need of extensive upgrades or replacement to meet far more stringent environmental regulations than the system was designed for and also to best ensure the long-term sustainability of sewage management in the region.  The draft plan – known formally as a Liquid Waste Management Plan – is now at a pivotal stage where a decision must be made on how to upgrade the infrastructure to meet the new environmental standards.  To help with this decision, the RDKB is calling on the assistance of area residents and stakeholders.

“Environmentally sound liquid waste management is one of our basic collective responsibilities” said Robert Cacchioni, Chair of the Liquid Waste Management Plan Steering Committee, “the more people participate in the process, the more our responsibilities are understood, including the high costs that will be incurred to upgrade our infrastructure and we strongly encourage everyone to participate”.

“Liquid waste management can be one of those out-of-sight out-of-mind issues that people don’t pay attention to until something goes wrong” said Alan Stanley, General Manager of Environmental Services, “the open houses are a great way to learn about what happens to your waste after it goes down your drain”.

The Regional District will hold three open houses between June 22nd and 23rd in Trail, Warfield and Rossland, where residents and stakeholders will have an opportunity to learn more about the proposed plan and provide feedback.  Further details on the plan and upcoming open house events can be found online at rdkb.com.
