Hit-and-run sends one to hospital; police ask public for information

Local police are looking for an Alberta driver after a hit-and-run Friday morning sent at least one person to hospital Friday.
The incident occurred on Hwy 3B at a place called Wedding Cake Corner, according to Trail top cop Sgt. Darren Oelke, whose detachment got the call at roughly 8:35 a.m.
“A small black car with Alberta plates, a bike rack and bike on the back was driving down toward Warfield and lost control at the corner, forcing two other vehicles to take evasive action,” Oelke said. “It (the black car) slid sideways into the oncoming lane of traffic. One vehicle pulled over … while a van whose driver was attempting to pass the stopped vehicle swerved to avoid a collision with the black car and collided with the stopped vehicle instead.
“The bike attached to the black car also struck the van, opening up the side of it like a can opener.
“The black car accelerated and left at a high rate of speed, according to witnesses, and a fourth motorist followed in an attempt to locate the car and get a license plate number, but the black car was long gone.”
The driver of the van was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
“Everybody has an obligation to stop at the scene of an accident they’re involved in,” Oelke said. “It’s a very serious offence to leave.”
