Dr. Scott Emery Rolls Out Succession Plan while Managing Rare Genetic Mitochondrial Disease

September 23rd, 2024

The Institute of Movement (in.MVMNT) announces the addition of Dr. Phil and Dr. Danielle McCary, a husband-and-wife chiropractic team joining the clinic as new partners. Relocating from Portland, OR, the McCarys bring a wealth of experience and deep commitment to patient care, marking a significant development for the practice during a transitional time.

The integration of the McCarys is especially meaningful to Dr. Scott Emery, the clinic’s founder. He and Dr. Phil McCary share a long history as close friends and former roommates from their chiropractic training days. Together with Dr. Stephanie Church, the in.MVMNT team now boasts over 50 years of combined chiropractic expertise.

“Phil and Danielle have demonstrated a remarkable commitment to their patients and community, previously operating Laurelhurst Chiropractic in NE Portland, and they bring that same passion and dedication to Trail and the surrounding areas,” says Dr. Emery. “Their decision to join in.MVMNT is rooted in their desire to become deeply invested in this community, and to contribute to the health and well-being of our existing patient-base and future clientele for many years to come.”

As the clinic celebrates this expansion, it also marks a significant time of transition for Dr. Emery. For the past several years, he has been managing a rare and severe genetic mitochondrial disease called MELAS (Mitochondrial Encephalomyopathy with Lactic Acidosis and Stroke-like episodes), which continues to impact his health and progressively deteriorate his quality of life. In response, Dr. Emery and his wife Julia have developed a succession plan to ensure the clinic’s continued excellence. Over the coming years, Dr. Emery will gradually reduce his hands-on practice to better navigate this condition.

“The decision to start stepping back from my hands-on practice has not been an easy one,” says Dr. Emery. “I am confident, however, that the addition of two of my closest friends and most revered colleagues to our already incredible team of professionals will not only maintain but enhance the level of care we provide.”

Dr. Phil McCary specializes in acute care and treating traumatic injuries, particularly post-accident rehabilitation. Dr. Danielle McCary, on the other hand, focuses on pediatric and pre/post-natal care, having collaborated with the Oregon State Health Sciences pediatric and maternal medicine teams. The McCarys’ decision to join the practice is personal, driven by the desire to raise their family near Danielle’s local relatives and integrate into the Trail community. They are enthusiastic about their new roles and eager to support Dr. Emery during his health transition.

“I want to extend my deepest gratitude to our patients and the community for their continued support,” adds Dr. Emery. “It has been bittersweet to watch this plan come together, but with this team in place, I am certain that the highest level of care and support will continue for our community for many years to come.”

Dr. Stephanie Church continues to grow her chiropractic practice, offering patients her extensive knowledge and expertise. Her dedication to patient-centered care, empowering health in others, and her contagious passion for life and this community, continue to make her an integral and celebrated part of the in.MVMNT team.

Julia Emery (Maniecki) is expanding her traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture practice, with the upcoming addition of Katrina Lortie, who will be completing her board exams this spring and mentoring under Julia’s guidance. Sara Howard and Kat Lewin continue to ensure smooth clinic operations and a first-class healthcare experience for everyone that walks through their doors.

The community is invited to celebrate this new chapter on Oct. 19 at in.MVMNT’s first Appreciation Night at the Trail clinic, located at 1300 Cedar Ave., from 3–7 p.m.

“We welcome the community to meet the new team members and reflect on the clinic’s growth and future,” says Dr. Emery.
