It’s been a long battle, but the City of Castlegar has finally cleared the various court cases and has the green light to tear down the City Centre Motel downtown.

In a decision released today (March 21), B.C. Court of Appeals upheld an earlier court decision empowering the city to proceed with demolition of the dilapidated City Centre building.   Mayor Lawrence Chernoff said the process has been like looking down a long tunnel and seeing no light at all – until now.

“Yes, I’m glad it’s over,” he said. “They’re going to start demolition Monday.”

He said it could take three or four weeks to remove all the hazardous material, like asbestos, from the site, at which point the building can be torn down fairly quickly.

He said the cost of demolition, which could be as much as $140,000 to $150,000, will be billed to the owner, Susan McLaren.
